Ratnagiri vs Devgad Alphonso Taste Test: We Compared Both Side by Side

This is the great Alphonso debate: Ratnagiri or Devgad? Both hold GI certification. Both are Konkan-grown. Mango lovers argue about this every season. We put them side by side to settle it.
The Setup
We tested 6 mangoes from each origin — same harvest date (April 15, 2026), same Grade A sizing, both naturally ripened using the hay-and-wood-shaving method. Blind test with 8 participants in Mumbai.
Aroma
Ratnagiri: intense, room-filling floral fragrance detectable from 1 metre. Devgad: excellent aroma, slightly less intense but still distinctly Alphonso. Participants could differentiate consistently — Ratnagiri won on aroma 7/8.
Brix Reading
Ratnagiri: 23.4° average across 6 samples. Devgad: 21.8° average. Both exceptional — this is like comparing a 92-point wine to a 90-point wine. The difference exists but is not dramatic.
Texture and Flesh
Both completely fibre-free. Ratnagiri flesh slightly softer and more custard-like. Devgad marginally firmer — which some participants preferred for eating sliced. Neither had any discernible fibre.
Verdict
Ratnagiri edges Devgad on aroma and Brix. Devgad edges Ratnagiri on size and firmness for some uses. Both are miles ahead of anything grown outside the GI zone. If you've never had either, start with Ratnagiri — it's the definitive expression of what Alphonso can be.
