Gir Kesar Mango: Complete Guide — Taste, Origin, Season, Price

Gir Kesar is the most underrated premium mango in India. While Alphonso gets the headlines, Kesar quietly builds a loyal following among buyers who discover it — and rarely go back to ordinary mangoes.
What is Gir Kesar Mango?
Gir Kesar is a mango variety exclusive to the Gir forest region of Gujarat, grown primarily in Junagadh and Amreli districts. 'Kesar' means saffron in Hindi, a direct reference to the intensely orange flesh of the fruit. It is one of only a few Indian mangoes to hold GI certification (Girnar region).
Taste Profile
Kesar has a musky-sweet aroma that is distinctly different from Alphonso's floral intensity. The flesh is dense, smooth, and rich — with a deep orange colour and a sweetness that builds gradually. Brix levels of 18–22° make it significantly sweeter than most varieties but slightly behind peak Alphonso. Excellent for eating fresh and for aamras.
Kesar vs Alphonso: Which to Choose?
Alphonso: more intense, more aromatic, higher price point, shorter season (March–June). Kesar: musky-sweet, longer shelf life, more affordable, available May–July. If you are buying for flavour complexity and aroma, Alphonso. If you are buying for value, versatility (cooking and eating), and a longer summer window, Kesar is the better choice.
Kesar Season 2026
Kesar season opens in May and runs through July. Because it overlaps with and extends beyond the Alphonso season, many buyers transition from Alphonso to Kesar as May progresses — maintaining premium mango quality through the full summer.

Food SafetyHow to Identify Carbide-Free Mangoes (6 Simple Tests)
