There is a mango that the Nizams of Hyderabad kept for themselves. A fruit so prized that it was literally named 'Imam's Favourite' β a royal designation for a variety that even today commands immediate attention simply by its extraordinary size. The Imam Pasand, also known as Himayat, is the rarest large-format mango in India. Each fruit weighs between 380β600 grams. It is fibre-free, custard-smooth, and traces its lineage directly to the royal orchards of Hyderabad. This is the complete guide.

1. The Royal Origin Story
The Imam Pasand variety is believed to have been cultivated in the royal orchards of the Nizam of Hyderabad β one of the wealthiest monarchies in pre-Independence India. The name 'Imam Pasand' translates directly to 'Favourite of the Imam.' Some historians trace the variety to Tamilnadu, where it is called 'Himayat' or 'Himam Pasand.' Today, the primary growing regions are the districts of Telangana and Tamil Nadu, with Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh also producing significant quantities.

2. The Extraordinary Size
The Imam Pasand is the largest Indian mango variety sold commercially. A single fruit weighs between 380 and 600 grams β compared to an average Alphonso at 220β260g or a Kesar at 200β250g. This means a single Imam Pasand mango is nutritionally equivalent to two or three standard premium mangoes. Our 6-piece box delivers approximately 2.5 kg β six complete servings of extraordinary quality.

3. Texture: Custard-Smooth, Zero Fibre
The defining characteristic of the Imam Pasand is its texture: completely fibre-free, extremely smooth, and almost custard-like. This is remarkable given its size β larger fruit typically has more fibrous tissue. The Imam Pasand is the exception. When cut open, the thick, saffron-golden flesh slides off the seed in a clean sheet, with absolutely no strings. It is the most refined-texture mango in India.

4. Flavour Profile: Mild Honey with Citrus
Unlike the intensely aromatic Alphonso or musky-sweet Kesar, the Imam Pasand has a more restrained, elegant flavour profile: mild honey sweetness with clean citrus undertones and a subtle floral background note. The Brix level is 16β19Β° β slightly lower than other premium varieties but with exceptional flavour depth. This moderate sweetness is a feature: it makes the Imam Pasand the ideal mango for those who find Alphonso too intensely sweet.

5. Season: May to July
The Imam Pasand season runs from May through July, largely overlapping with Kesar season. It arrives slightly after the Alphonso peak (MarchβJune), providing an outstanding transition variety. At PureAam, we dispatch Imam Pasand from the third week of May when the fruit has achieved full tree maturity. Because of its size and the high quality demands, we harvest only when Brix levels confirm a minimum reading of 16Β°.

6. The Rarity Factor
Imam Pasand is genuinely rare for structural reasons. The tree is an irregular bearer β it produces heavy yields only in alternate years. This biennial production pattern keeps supply consistently lower than demand. Additionally, the large fruit size means each tree produces fewer individual fruits than other varieties. These factors combine to make authentic Imam Pasand difficult to source outside of Telangana and Tamil Nadu markets.

7. How to Verify Authenticity
A genuine Imam Pasand is unmistakeable by size: if a mango weighs less than 350g, it is not an Imam Pasand. The skin colour when ripe is a warm greenish-yellow (it does not turn fully golden like Alphonso). The flesh should be deep saffron-gold. The seed is disproportionately small relative to the fruit size β approximately 10% of the total weight, leaving an extraordinary flesh-to-seed ratio.

8. Culinary Applications
The Imam Pasand's mild flavour and massive size make it exceptionally versatile. Its most famous preparation in Hyderabad is 'Aam ka Meetha' β a simple dessert of chilled Imam Pasand pulp served with saffron milk. Its large seed cavity also makes it ideal for stuffed mango desserts. The mild flavour means it pairs beautifully with cream, cardamom, and rose water without any ingredient overwhelming the mango.

9. Nutritional Value
The Imam Pasand is rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin A (Beta-Carotene), Folate, and Mangiferin. Its lower sugar content (16β19Β° Brix) relative to Alphonso or Chausa makes it a comparatively better choice for diabetic-conscious consumers who still want to enjoy a premium mango. The high water content (approximately 82% by weight) also makes it exceptionally hydrating.

10. Ordering Imam Pasand Online
Because of its rarity and the specific geography required, ordering authentic Imam Pasand online is challenging. Always verify the source state (Telangana, Tamil Nadu, or Andhra Pradesh) and confirm natural ripening. A carbide-ripened Imam Pasand loses its delicate flavour completely. At PureAam, our 6-piece Royal Box is sourced directly from heritage orchards in Telangana and dispatched within 24 hours of harvest.
